The Elster Canal Path is a 3.5 km one-way trail from Port Phillip Bay in Elwood to Gardenvale Station. This easy, dog-friendly walk follows Elster Creek through a blend of suburban streets, greenery, and urban landscapes.

The path is mostly paved with low elevations, making it accessible for all fitness levels. As you move through the Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve in Brighton, the surface changes to grass and gravel, offering a more natural feel.

The trail along Elwood Bend has peaceful moments, with trees and seating along the way. However, it's not without its challenges. Parts of the canal can collect litter, and an active petition is urging the local council to address this issue.

At the Brighton end, the trail has a more industrial, concrete feel, resembling an LA-style aqueduct surrounded by suburban fences.

The 13-hectare Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve is located in the middle of the walk. This section of the path is currently being upgraded to restore native biodiversity. It provides a scenic space filled with native trees, creeks, and wildlife. Despite some urban grittiness, the Elster Canal Path is a refreshing option for a relaxing walk with plenty of opportunities to enjoy nearby dog-friendly activities.
