Brunch in Melbourne isn’t exactly rare, but Shanklin Cafe in Hawthorn East still manages to surprise. It’s not flashy or overhyped, and you won’t see influencers filming oat lattes here every ten seconds. What you will find at this dog-friendly cafe is a standout menu, dog-friendly charm, and staff who actually seem happy to see you.

It’s the kind of place you stumble across once, and then accidentally go back to every weekend.

There’s a cosy covered courtyard out front, fully enclosed and heated, so you can bring the pup rain or shine. Water bowls are a given. Portions? Generous. Coffee? Proper. If you’re someone who likes a good chilli oil moment or a surprise hit of rose in your drink, this spot nails both ends of the spectrum.

Shanklin doesn’t try too hard, and it doesn’t need to. It’s quietly, confidently excellent. Which is probably why locals have been keeping it to themselves. Until now.

The Menu at Shanklin Cafe

The Shanklin Cafe menu is what happens when comfort food meets kitchen confidence. Big on flavour and a proper brunch with a Mediterranean lean and a few curveballs you’ll want to try twice.

Food Faves: Portobello, Prawns, and Plenty of Halloumi

Start with the Portobello Mushroom Medley, a crunchy, creamy, chilli-oil dream layered with beetroot hummus, whipped ricotta and poached egg. It’s got texture, it’s got balance, and it’s got serious wow factor.

The Baked Eggs Shakshuka is a whole other level. Bubbling away in its iron pot with spicy sujuk and basil, it’s the kind of dish that makes you wonder why everyone else waters theirs down. There’s even a veggie version if you swap the sujuk for mushrooms. Add halloumi. Trust us.

Other crowd-pleasers include the Beirut Big Breakfast (big is an understatement), the lamb-packed Benny, and indulgent Nutella Pancakes if you’re skipping lunch and leaning into joy.

Coffee & Speciality Drinks: A Turkish Delight (Literally)

Shanklin’s coffee game is strong. Expect smooth espresso, creamy milk work, and actual hot-hot lattes (not lukewarm guesses). Baristas here know what they’re doing, and even the locals who are baristas have called it out.

For something a little extra, try the Turkish Delatte! A floral, sweet, non-caffeinated beauty with rose notes and mousse on top. It’s dessert in a mug. We prefer the hot comforting version but also comes cold for something light and refreshing.

Other fan favourites include the Matcha Latte, Campfire Hot Chocolate (with actual roasted marshmallows), and a Dark & Stormy mocktail if you’re playing it non-alcoholic.

The Vibe at Shanklin Cafe

There’s something warm and familiar about Shanklin. Maybe it’s the soft hum of locals catching up, or the fact that nearly every second table has a dog under it. Either way, it’s good energy.

Dog-Friendly Cafe Setup

Pooches are welcome out front in the fully enclosed, covered outdoor area. It seats around 14, and it’s properly heated. Staff are relaxed and always have a smile or a water bowl ready. No weird rules or leash panic. Just an easy, welcoming vibe for both you and your four-legged mate.

Frineldy Cafe Service

Friendly, fast, and on it. Orders come out quick, the team remember regulars, and there’s none of that awkward ‘robotic waiter’ energy you sometimes get at trendy cafes. Dan and the crew are genuine and community-minded. If your dog’s behaving, expect compliments. If your kid’s making noise, you’ll probably get a wink and a laugh, not a side-eye.
